Bavaer is a cattle feed produced by DSM [1] and is marketed as "a feed additive that reduces enteric methane emissions". In a cow's rumen, microbes help break down food. This releases hydrogen and carbon dioxide. An enzyme combines these gases to form methane. Bovaer is a feed supplement that suppresses the enzyme [2].

In a letter from the FDA to Elancoah [3] reguarding bovaer, they specify that 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP), marketed as Bovaer, contains the active substance 3-NOP and affects the structure or any function of the body of an animal, and therefore it is a drug.

All substances in Bovaer 10 are: Silicon dioxide, propylene glycol, 3-nitrooxypropanol [4]

The warnings given Elanco (the manufacturer) are: Not for human use. Caution should be exercised when handling this product. 3-nitrooxypropanol may damage male fertility and reproductive organs, is potentially harmful when inhaled, and is a skin and eye irritant. Personal protective gear, including eye wear, a dust mask, and impervious gloves, should be worn when handling this product.

The food safety commission of Japan has found in a subacute toxicity study that Bovaer Decreases the absolute relative weights of male testis and epididymis, decreases the sperm count and a decrease in the motor activity of sperm [5].
